A WILL IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN

I MARTIN BAKER , SR. OF NICHOLAS COUNTY AND COMMONWEALTH OF KENTUCKY, BEING VERY WEAK IN BODY BUT OF A SOUND MIND AND MEMORY; KNOWING THAT GOD HATH APPOINTED ONCE FOR ALL MEN TO DIE AND AFTER DEATH JUDGEMENT DOTH MAKE CONSTITUTE AND ORDAIN THIS MY LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT REVOKING ALL OTHERS HERETOFORE MADE IN MY NAME AFTER RECOMMENDING MY SOUL TO GOD THAT GAVE IT AND MY BODY TO MY FRIENDS TO BE BURRIED IN A CHRISTAIN LIKE MANNER, AND AS TOUCHING THOSE WORLDLY THINGS, WHICH IT HATH PLEASED GOD TO BLESS ME WITH I WISH TO DISPOSE OF THEM IN THE FOLLOWING MANNER, TOWIT, FIRST THAT ALL MY JUST DEBTS BE PAID, ITEM , I LEAVE TO MY BELOVED WIFE ALL MY PLANTATION EXCEPT THE PART MY SON JOHN NOW OCCUPIES, DURING HER LIFETIME, AND AT HER DEATH TO BE DIVIDED BETWEEN JOHN AND JAMES BAKER AGREEABLE TO AN ARTICLE THAT NOW EXISTS. ALSO I LEAVE TO MY BELOVED WIFE ALL MY NEGROES AND ALL HOUSEHOLD FURNITURE, AND ALL MY STOCK OF EVERY KIND AND FARMING UTENSILS DURING HER NATURAL LIFE, AND AT HER DEATH MY NEGROES, AND ALL OTHER PROPERTY BE EQUALLY DIVIDED AMONGST ALL MY CHILDREN, MY WILL THAT SQUIRE AND CATE MY TWO OLD NEGROES BE SET AT LIBERTY AT MY WIFES DEATH AND MY EXECUTORS KEEP THEM FROM SUFFERING.

ITEM, I LEAVE TO MY GRANDSON MARTIN MCCLURE ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS AND A FIFTY DOLLAR HORSE AND SADDLE TO BE PAID BY EXECUTORS WHEN HE COMES OF AGE. MY WILL THAT MY AFTER NAMED EXECUTORS BE FULLY AUTHORIZED TO ______ ALL MY BUSINESSES AND MAKE ALL DIVISIONS AGREEABLE TO THIS WILL, AND THAT THEY MAKE NO APPRAISEMENT, NOR SALE. 1. MARTIN5 BAKER, SR. (THOMAS4, MARTIN3, JOHN2, MARTIN1) was born 1740 in GREENBRIAR COUNTY, VA. NOW WVA, and died Oct 1812 in NICHOLAS COUNTY, KY. He married MARY (POLLY) KIMBROUGH 1761 in HANOVER COUNTY, VA, daughter of BRADLEY KIMBROUGH and SARAH THOMPSON. She was born in HANOVER COUNTY, VA., and died 1830 in NICHOLAS COUNTY, KY.

 

Notes for MARTIN BAKER, SR.:

MARTIN BAKER, SR. WAS AN OFFICER OF THE CHARLOTTE COUNTY MILITIA DURING THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION. HE OWNED LAND IN CHARLOTTE COUNTY AROUND 1777.

WILLIAM GRIFFITH WAS LIVING THERE, AND ACCORDING TO TAX LISTS AND OTHER DOCUMENTS, IT'S KNOWN THAT HE LEFT CHARLOTTE IN 1783 AND MOVED TO GREENBRIER COUNTY WHICH WAS THEN IN VIRGINIA BUT BECOMING WEST VIRGINIA IN 1863.

IN 1787 MARTIN BAKER WITH HIS FAMILY MOVED FROM CHARLOTTE COUNTY, MERELY PASSING THROUGH GREENBRIER AND PICKED UP GRIFFITH AND TOGETHER THEY CAME INTO KENTUCKY. THEY TRAVELED BY FLAT BOAT DOWN THE OHIO TO LOUISVILLE AND THEN OVERLAND TO NICHOLAS COUNTY , SETTLING ALONG STEELE'S RUN IN THE HEADQUARTERS/ HOOKTOWN VICINITY.

SARAH PROVED TO BE MORE THAN AN ORDINARY WOMAN, AND WHOSE EARLY LIFE SEEMED TO BE A NECESSITY TO THE EARLY SETTLERS. AT THAT TIME DOCTORS WERE FEW AND LIVED A GREAT DISTANCE APART. AFTER COMING TO KENTUCKY, SARAH STUDIED MEDICINE AND SOON MASTERED THE KNOWLEDGE OF HERBS, AND BEFORE CIVILIZATION HAD CAST ITS MANTLE OVER THE COUNTRY, HER PRACTICE HAD EXTENDED FAR AND NEAR.
