Sudie Botner, 59, widow of
Hiram Botner, died at her home at Travelers Rest at 5 o'clock Wednesday
morning, December 25, 1940. Death was
caused by pneumonia. Funeral services were held at the Travelers Rest Church
by Rev. Ike Gabbard and Rev. Albert C. Wildman. Interment was in Travelers Rest Cemetery
under direction of Garrett Funeral Home. She is survived by two
daughters, Mrs. Estill Botner of Middletown, Ohio and Mrs. James Treadway of
Travelers Rest; one brother, Taulbee Smith of Cincinnati, Ohio and two
sisters, Mrs. Callie Brandenburg of Heidleburg and Mrs. Kate Kelly of Evelyn

Charlena (Crank) Badge, Age 87 of Hamilton, passed away on Thursday,
January 27, 2005 at 7:16 a.m. at the Tri County Extended Care Facility. She
was born in Owsley County,
Kentucky on August 27, 1917 the
daughter of Charles and Roberta (Baker) Crank. Charlena married John E.
Curtis, Sr. and he preceded her in death. She married John B. (Badge)
Bajdziewicz on October 10, 1959 and he preceded her in death on January 7,
1999. She was active in sports and played basketball for Fairfield High School.
She enjoyed bowling, fishing, sewing, Cincinnati Reds Baseball and Bearcats
Basketball. She was employed by Pillsbury and was also a Union Official and
employed as a clerk for Singer Wallpaper and Paint for 30 years. Charlena is
survived by her children, John E. Curtis, Jr. and wife Bobbie of Cincinnati,
Bobbi Hundley,(Marvin) Hundley of Fairfield, Frank Bajdziewicz and wife Agnes
of Oldsmar, Tampa, Florida; five grandchildren, Cindy Beck and her husband
Mike, John E.Curtis, III and his wife Sarah, Stephanie Friedstrom and her
husband Scott, Ryan and Alex Deller; nine great grandchildren, Nicole,
Christopher and Drew Beck; Blaine and Camen Jones, and Abigail, Eric, Jon,
and Yael Friedstrom; a brother Clifford Crank and his wife Jean of Tampa,
Florida; and many nieces and nephews also survive. She was also preceded in
death by a brother Kimber Crank and her parents. Funeral services will be
held at The Webb Noonan Funeral Home, Ross Avenue at D Street on Tuesday February 1, 2005 at
10:00am with the Rev. John W. Carter, Jr. officiating. Visitation will be on
Monday from 5:00pm until 8:00pm. Burial will be in Rose Hill
Burial Park.
Charlena was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother who enjoyed spending
time with her family and friends. Memorial contributions may be made to the

died Wednesday, November 22, 2000 in the V A Medical Center. Mr. Cole was a
native of Owsley County, KY and was a son to the late Willie and
Emma Bailey Cole and was the husband of Annie Quinn Cole. He was a US Army
Veteran of WW II and was a member of the VFW Post # 891. He was a member of Skyland Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife he is survived by five daughters, Shirley Ann Cole of
the home; Emma Lee Bucklew of Swannanoa; Rita Cole of Arden;
Nadine Parham and Snowdena Scott both of Asheville;
one son, Sam Cole of Asheville;
eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be
held Saturday, November 25, 2000 at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of Groce Funeral
Home at Lake Julian with the Reverends Bobby Smith and Stacey Harris

Courier: Fri. 11-29-1940, Mrs. Mary Catherine Combs, 90, widow of the
late James S. Combs, died at her home at Pebworth at 11:55 p.m., Thursday, 21
November. Death due to infirmities of age, climaxed an illness of
several months. Funeral services were conducted at 2 o'clock Saturday
afternoon by Rev. Luther Newnam. Interment was in the Newnam graveyard
near her home. Congleton Bros., Beattyville undertakers were in charge. Survivors:
four daughters, Mrs. Wm [Willabeth] Cornelius, Beattyville; Mrs. Wm [Lilly]
Sternberg, Beattyville; Mrs. Wm [Flora] Holcomb, Plesant Grove; Mrs. Wm

Raleigh Combs, brother in law of
Frank Brandenburg, Booneville, died at his home at Indian Fields, Clark County, Wednesday night [Aug 14, 1940]. A life long resident of Owsley County,
he moved to Indian Fields last year. Funeral services were held at 10:30 this
morning by Rev. Luther Newnam, Beattyville. Survivors include several
children and two sisters, Mrs. P. S. Treadway of Booneville and Mrs. Susan
Winn of Turin.

Walker Combs, January 9, 1928, Middletown Journal, Middletown,
Ohio, Walker
Combs Killed In Unusual Accident At Mill Death Almost Instantaneous Fellow
Workmen Unable To Explain How Tragedy Happened. Walker Combs, age 39, 1918 Woodlawn Avenue, was fatally
injured at the East works of the American Rolling Mill company at 3 o'clock
Sunday morning. Mr. Combs came to Middletown
from Booneville, Ky. Previous to his employment as a
general labor at the East works last September, he worked as a carpenter in Middletown. Surviving
him are his widow, five children, his mother, two brothers and a
sister. Mr. Combs along with other men was engaged in pickling sheets
to cleanse them. The sheets are first immersed in acid water and then rinsed
in hot water. Suddenly Combs' companions heard him scream from the hot water
tank and rushed to his rescue, but death was almost instantaneous. His fellow
workmen were at an utter loss to explain how the accident happened. Official
investigation to determine the cause of the accident has not disclosed a
reason for Mr. Combs' being in any position that the accident could occur.
The edge of the tank is waist high, affording protection to the workmen
engaged in the pickling process. The body was taken today from
the funeral home of Undertaker J. D. Riggs to the residence. Tomorrow
morning, it will be sent to Arglyer,
Ky., where burial will be made Thursday.

Frank Dunn, From The News -
Enterprise Online, 24 March 2003, Frank Dunn, 88, of Elizabethtown,
died Sunday, March 23, 2003, at North Hardin Health and Rehabilitation
Center in Radcliff. An Owsley
County native, he was a member of College Heights United
Methodist Church.
He was a former member of United Mine Workers Association and a former member
of the 3 C's. He was retired from E'town Sportswear, where he worked for 20
years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ida Ruth Dunn; a son, Billy J.
Dunn; and his parents, John and Amazon Young Dunn. Survivors include a
daughter, Joyce Broaddrick of Pittsburgh;
a brother, Wade Dunn of Viper; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
The funeral is 11 a.m. Wednesday at Brown Funeral Home in Elizabethtown. Burial will be in Elizabethtown Memorial Gardens.
Visitation is from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Michael H Gabbard , former resident of Owsley
County, died at his home at Berea, Tuesday night,
June 2, following an illness of approximately two months. His death was due
to complications of old age.
Mr. Gabbard was 81 years of age at the time of his
death. He was born at Indian Creek in Owsley County,
where he married Rachael Combs on 24 July 1884. Later the couple moved to Berea where Mr. Gabbard became an employee of Berea College as a carpenter and which
position he held for 22 years or until his retirement on account of age. Mrs.
Gabbard is survived by: His widow, Rachael Combs Gabbard; two sons, J. C.
Gabbard of Berea and E. B. Gabbard of Hamilton, OH; one daughter, Mary Ellen
Marshall, has passed on; nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren;
several half brothers and sisters: Will Gabbard of Harrison, IN; Mrs. Jaily
Duff of Ricetown, Ky Mrs. Delphi Bishop of Oneida, Ky; Mrs. Lydia Combs of
Covington, Ky; Abel Gabbard of Cow Creek, Ky; and Bud Gabbard of Cow Creek,
Ky. Mr. Gabbard was a life long member of the Baptist Church and of the
Masonic lodge. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at
the Baptist Church
in Berea with
Dr. Raine and Dr. Morrison, officiating.

Lucy Thomas Hall, age 87, died at her home in Proctor Monday,
February 7th, 1938. She was born in Owsley county August 19, 1850 and was
married to Wm. Hall of Owsley county in 1868. For the past thirty-five years
she has been a resident of Proctor. Surviving her are five of eleven
children: Albert Hall, of Congleton; James Hall, Proctor, Winslow Hall,
Proctor, Mrs. Belle Evans and W. R. Hall both of Washington, D.C.; twelve
grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and 3 great, great grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at the home Wednesday afternoon at 2:00
o'clock by Rev. Luther NEWNAM. Burial was in the Proctor cemetery.

Alex Herald, 74, died at the St. Joseph
hospital in Lexington
Monday, December 23, 1940 following an operation. Funeral services were held
at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon by Rev. Ike Gabbard and Rev. Albert C. Wildman.
Burial was in the family cemetery near Booneville. Survivors include one
daughter, Mrs. Buddie Gross of Booneville and one son, Richard Herald of
Booneville.

Elsie Marie (Spencer) Johnson, From the Middletown Journal, 17 Nov 2002Elsie Marie
(Spencer) Johnson, 86, of Lebanon, died peacefully Friday, Nov. 15, 2002, at
the Lebanon Country Manor. Born Aug.
10, 1916 in Owsley County, Ky., the daughter of John and Elvira (Noble)
Spencer, she had lived in the Lebanon area her entire adult lifetime. A
loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she was a devoted Christian
and member of the Franklin Baptist Church and also the Lebanon Community
Church (formerly the Lebanon Church of the Nazarene).Preceded in death by her
parents and husband, Ray Wilson Johnson, she is survived by daughters Edna
Southard and her husband Norman of Miamisburg, Jeanette Johnson, Jearlean
Johnson and Anna Martin all of Lebanon, and Carolyn Rickard and her husband
Edwin of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; and son Thomas Paul Johnson, of Hamilton. She
is also survived by nine grandchildren and 12 great - grandchildren. Arrangements: Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday

Cynthia Ann Combs Marcum was born May 1, 1843
and departed this life March 5, 1939, at the age of 95 years, 10 months and 5
days. She was united in marriage
with James Moses Marcum January 15, 1869. To this union was born seven
children, six of whom are now living. She has been a Christian for 77 years
having joined the Christian church at the age of 18. Surviving her are: three
daughters, Mrs. Mark [Sophia] Bell, Turin; Mrs. Sam Congleton, College Hill; Mrs. James
Congleton, Salem, IN;
three sons, Edgar Garrett, Ravenna; Robert
Harrison and Napoleon B., both of Turin; two
sisters, Mrs. Stratton Treadway, Vincent; and Mrs. William Winn, Turin; one brother N. B. Combs, Turin; 35 grandchildren, 29 great
grandchildren and one great, great
grandchild.

Bascum Osborne, age 60 years, died at his home near St. Helens Saturday morning, January 22, 1938 of heart
trouble. He was born in Owsley county on Fish Creek, Mary 6 1877. He was
first married to Miss Emma SEALE and three children were born to this union.
Willie of Newport survives him. After the death of his first wife, on July
16, 1912, he was married to Miss Flora COLE. To this union nine children were
born. His widow and seven children survive him: Bertha, age 21; Roscoe, age
19; Bert and Sissel, 15; Walker, 11; Lena, 8; and Henry, 5. He was the last of the six
children of Andrew and America MOORE Osborne. He joined the Methodist Church
in Owsley county when a young man.

Preston Spencer, 88, died at his home near Zoe at 10:30 o'clock
Tuesday morning. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2:30
o'clock by the Rev. Charlie Kincaid and burial was in the family graveyard
near Zoe. Mr. Spencer, son of Allen and Rinda Combs Spencer, was born at
Lerose, Owsley County. He is survived by his wife
Mrs. Polly Barrett Spencer to who he was married some 60 years ago, three
sons and three daughters: Zeke, Lerose; Jackie of Clay City, Morty Spencer of
Zoe; Mrs. Rinda Van Cleave of Depond, IN, Miss Lula Spencer, Cincinnati, OH,
and Miss Mable Spencer of Zoe.

Judge W. C. Taylor
The
Lexington Leader, 5 May 1930- Judge W. C. Taylor, 70 years old, died at the
Guerrant Clinic this morning at 5:40 o'clock after an illness of two years
duration. Judge Taylor was a native of Owsley county. After
leaving his home he came to Menifee county where he served as county judge
for eight years. He was a member of the First Methodist church and the
I. O. O. F. Lodge. Judge Taylor has been a prominent and wealthy
resident of Clark county for the past 26
years. In 1894 Judge Taylor served one term in the Kentucky legislature as a representative
from Menifee and Montgomery counties. He was the son of the late Calvin
and Julia Ann Shackelford Taylor. He is survived by his wife, Mrs.
Mariba Osborne Taylor; three sons, Claude, Bruce and Courtney Taylor, all of
this county; one sister, Mrs. M. J. Taulbee; one niece, Mrs. A. H. Cundiff,
of this city, two nephews, Taylor Taulbee of this county, and S. H. Taulbee
of Chicago. Funeral services will be held at the
First Methodist church on Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock with Dr. O. B.
Crockett officiating and assisted by the Rev. G. W. Banks of Carrollton. Pallbearers will be

Susan (Combs) Winn, age 91, died at her home early Wednesday morning
[1942].She suffered a stroke some time ago and complications developed.
Funeral services were conducted at the grave Thursday afternoon by Rev. E. W.
Ishmael. Burial was in the Combs Cemetery in South Booneville.
Mrs. Winn was the wife of the late William Winn. She is survived by three
children, nine grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Her two sons and
one daughter are Henry Winn of Brooksville,
IN., Elkannah Winn of Turin
and Mrs. Mamie Isaacs of Levi.
