1905-1906 Report of Inspector of Mines

Morgan County

Kentucky Block Cannel Mines
Mine Office, Cannel City.

Transportation, Ohio & Kentucky and Lexington & Eastern Railways.

Operated by the Kentucky Block Cannel Coal Co., W.  DeL. Walbridge, president, new York City; M. L. Conly, Superintendent. The coal cutting machinery consists of twenty Harrison and six Ingersoll-Sergeant pick machines. Power is furnished by two Norwalk compressors.

[1905 - These mines were inspected once, on June 16th and 17th, in 1905. Conditions were satisfactory.]

Brushy Mine - Two inspections were made of this mine in 1906. As a whole the mine was maintained in a good condition.

No. 1 Mine - Inspected twice in 1906, and found to be in a satisfactory condition on each occasion.

Mayflower Mine
Mine Office, Caney.

Operated by Mayflower Cannel Coal Co., successor to the Eureka Cannel Coal Co.

[1905 - No. 2 and No. 3 mines were inspected June 17th. The No. 2 had practically no ventilation. There was no furnace, the air-shaft was too sm all and the stack not high enough. In No. 1 seven persons were employed. An airshaft had been sunk and preparations were under way for a furnace.]

Inspected March 13th - The face of the First Left entry was 100 feet ahead of the air; consequently the ventilating current did not travel within the required distance of the working places.

Inspected August 1st - The stoppings and curtains were in porr condition and too much air escaped to the return, that should have gone to the diggers. Drainage and timbering satisfactory.

Watson Mine

Mine Office, Caney.

Operated by the Watson Cannel Coal Co.

Inspected March 13th - The ventilating current did not travel the working places as required by law, although the volume entering the mine was ample.

Inspected August 1st - Ventilation was satisfactory, but there was too much mud and water on the main entry. No lack of proper posting was observed.

White Oak Mine

Mine Office, Piedmont.

Transportation, Ohio & Kentucky and Lexington & Eastern Railways.

Operated by White Oak Cannel Coal Co.

[1905 - No. 1 and No. 2 mines were inspected Junw 15th. Both mines were in satisfactory condition.]

Inspected March 14th - The volume of air entering the mine was not strong enough to enable me to get a measurement. The curtains on the room necks were old and leaky. Drainage and timbering satisfactory. This mine was closed down shortly after this inspection was made, and has not resumed operations.
