More About Larrie Kennedy: Burial: August 25, 1963, Calvert City Cemetery, Marshall Co, Ky Notes for Homer W Ford: The following was taken from a newspaper article written by David Hurst Marshall County's been concerned about basketball and education for over half a century. All this can be traced back to one of the county's true pioneers, Homer Ford. At 93, Ford recalls his life with a clarity and vitality few a third his age can boast. Ford's living at the Calvert City Convalescent Center now and loving it. "Here I've got lots of friends, people waiting on me, checking on me, and bringing me food. My son says I'm as happy as a rabbit in a briar patch," he says. Ford's philosophy of life explains his exuberance, "You've got to smile, got to learn to live with it. You adopt to whatever life throws you. You've got to like people, too." Ford began his life like a legendary pioneer--in a log cabin near the Pugh School. He was the only boy out of seven children. "They claim I was spoiled," he says. Ford says his childhood was typical of the time. He recalls the first pair of pants he wore. Back then, little boys wore dresses until they were three or four. I was about four when I got mine. My mother wove stuff on her loom to make them. They came halfway to my knees,'' he recalls. He decided to become a teacher one day when he was working in the fields. "I was suckering tobacco," he remembers. It was hot. Sweat was running down all over. Then and there I decided if there's any way to get out of this I will. So, I went to school.'' He completed the eighth grade in a one-room school. Then he took a teachers exam held in the county seat. Three classes of certificates were given, provided one didn't fail in any one subject, "Third class was given for a 65 percent average; second class for a 75 percent average and first class for 85 percent. You could teach on any of these,'' he explains. With teaching certificate in hand, Ford took over the Point Necessity School near Birmingham in 1910, an emergency school for students who couldn't go elsewhere. He was paid $25 per month and $6 a month for board. Next Ford doubled his salary by moving to Wilson Ridge in 1911, another one-room school. He later taught at Long Valley (1912) before taking Pugh School near his birthplace (1913). While at Pugh, Ford decided he'd "better get more schooling" and enrolled in the Normal School in Bowling Green . He explains that then you didn't need a high school diploma to get into higher education. At Bowling Green, it cost Ford $5 to register. He had the option of taking school room and board or going downtown where costs were higher. He took a room on the third floor of a boarding house for $13 a month, meals included. "I had it as good there as anywhere I'd been," Ford grins. "The railroad men stayed there and paid $18 a month. I got the same food they did," he added. There he met Larie Kennedy who became his wife for 50 years. They came back to Marshall County and taught together. When school was out where they were teaching, they went back to Bowling Green. Ford graduated in 1918. But, as Ford recalls, "At that time you could get a school as easy with an eighth grade education as with a PhD now. That's how much education has progressed. '' Ford' s next position as principle-teacher at Palma in 1914 gave him the chance to bring basketball to Marshall County. "I'd seen them play at Bowling Green. I thought our kids would like it. We had a blacksmith make the goal. .We built the backboards out of scrap wood, leveled off an area and dug trenches for out of bounds. The rule book gave the size and where to throw free throws from." As far as Ford knows this was the only basketball court in the county. "Basketball has changed a lot," Ford tells, "Then every time the ball went out, it went back to the center to jump. When someone was fouled, one person shot all the goals." Girl's basketball has changed even more. There were three teams: The defensive team stayed around the opponent's goal and an offensive team stayed around the team's goal, Ford explains. "It's been improved a lot," Ford thinks. He has some good tales to tell of early Marshall County basketball. This one comes from his time at Calvert City High School. "We went to Heath on Friday afternoon. All Calvert City went with us. It was spitting snow. It was a short game. They took the ball away. We almost didn't score," he remembers. Before that Ford said his team "thought they could play. But after that game, that was the sickest bunch I've ever seen." He called them into the chapel Monday morning. "We all sat down," he relates, "For a long time no one said anything. Finally I said, 'Boys, we've got something to learn. We went out and practiced in earnest then." That spring the team ended up being runners up in the area playoffs. Ford recalls a conversation with the Heath coach. "He came up to me and said, 'How'd you do it? You couldn't even play last fall.' I told him, "You taught us something." Ford started basketball programs at Livingston County High in 1918 as well. (Chronologically, this came before Calvert City.) While he was there World War I began and Ford thought he'd be drafted before the term ended. After his physical, he was told because he was a principal and a new father he was being excused for now. As the war ran on, he felt sure he'd be called. He had planned to resign his post and join the Navy. His thinking was, "At least then I'd have a place to sleep and if we go down we'll all go together.'' However, the war ended before he could resign. Ford's next position called for him to create Calvert City High School in 1919. "We started with 13 students," he tells, "Before the year was out we'd gained 50 students. The superintendent told me to get out there and get those eighth graders who've been there for three to four years. He said he'd let them stay in high school without a diploma if I approved.'' Ford stayed with his creation three years, long enough to see that the new school was accredited. Ford moved on to eastern Kentucky to be superintendent of the Consolidated School of Mining at Blue Diamond, Ky in 1923, a school for the children of miners in three mines. He conducted an interdenominational Sunday School class there and was in charge of a "colored school." He felt some apprehension about this because he'd "never even known a colored person." He was told that all he had to do was make a speech once in a while. Before his first speech one of the teachers introduced him "Students, this is Professor Ford. He's gonna make a speech. Now y'all help him. "I didn't know what she meant," Ford says. "But I started the speech and ever so often they'd say, 'yassir'. That's how they helped me. I made the best speech ever!" Ford really enjoyed the mountain people even though he'd hoped to find more of his political persuasion, Republican. He and the doctor were the only ones because most of the miners were from Knoxville or outside the area. When Ford returned home he opened a poultry ranch. He had 360 leghorn hens, but only made 50 cents a day from all of them. "I couldn't stay at that very long,'' he said. ''I really knew what it was to go through the Depression.'' By this time, requirements for teaching kept rising. He had to go back to school in Bowling Green again in 1927. He graduated in 1928, as president of the senior class. He returned as principal of the high school in Kuttawa in 1928. He stayed there one year. Roy Chumbler, superintendent of Marshall County Schools then called him back to Calvert City High until 1931. Ford decided to try the mercantile business next and opened a grocery store in Calvert City. "I had a little concrete building between the post office and the bank, a great location," he tells, "I had a wonderful trade, especially when the Dam was built. One hundred fifty of these people working there became my customers." He offered these customers a check cashing service. "The bank charged 15 cents or so to cash their checks, so I did it for them. They never did know I had to pay that 15 cents" he tells. This kind of money flow had never come to Ford as an educator; so he started looking around for something to do with the new wealth. "I started buying houses. I bought a concrete house up the street for $1,000. I put gas in and built a room for the bath and turned around and sold it for $6,000." He tells that he bought many houses cheap, fixed them up, rented them a while and then sold them for a good profit. Tragedy struck later. In a car wreck in Hardin, Ford's wife died. He and his grandson were injured badly and sent to Memphis. "After that I just wandered around, trying to hide my sorrow. I took trips all over, to the World's Fair and everywhere," he recalls, "But it wasn't until a trip to California with a group of tourists that I began to loosen up. I decided there was no reason to mope around all my life. I met a lady on the trip and brought her back to Calvert City." The lady, Elsie McLaughlin, became his wife. Ford tells that her sons live in Florida and still write him, send him gifts and think as much of him as they do their real father. They stayed in Calvert for a while since Ford felt it was home. ''I've been an elder in the Calvert City Church of Christ for 40 years," he said. They moved to the Jackson House in Paducah, "a wonderful place to live." Elsie died there three years ago. Ford decided he was getting a little too feeble to take complete care of himself and made a hard decision to move into a rest home. "It ready didn't sound good to me, but now I think I should have come long ago," he says. Ford says the Calvert City Convalescent Center is "lots of fun. I've never heard anyone say a cross word. I think about how my little grandmother lived the end of her life one month with my family, the next with my uncle. All she did was sit by the fireplace with her little stone pipe smoking the homemade tobacco we gave her." She was hard of hearing, Ford remembers and says, "Lots of days would go by without anyone saying anything to her. Every once in a while I'd go up to her and say, 'Granny, tell me about the Civil War.' Her eyes would light up. She'd straighten up and tell how she seen slaves whipped and about a n_____ girl that dropped a n_____ baby and how they whipped the girl. It was awful. A couple of weeks after that I'd go back up to her and say, "Granny, tell me about the Civil War' and she'd tell the same stories." Homer Ford has two sons. Vance is retired and living in Bowling Green. H.W. is Benton's 'Dr. Ford'. His father even calls him that. He's proud that all his grandsons are in school, but says he doesn't know if he'd want to raise a child now. Ford thinks education has gotten ''thinner''. "We didn't teach very many subjects, but we were more efficient. We had language, arithmetic, spelling and physiology. Now education's become thinner. I doubt many students today could figure out the interest on a lone of $253 for two years, three months and ten days. We could then." Ford says he changed methods all the time and was very strict, "I whipped and expelled students as needed." But, overall it was more learning and fun than discipline. One example Ford loves to tell is a bet he had with Watsy Stice. "I asked him if he was sure he was right. He said he was. I asked him how sum he was. He said, 'very sure.' So, I said, listen, I know were not supposed to bet, but, would you be willing to bet the end of your little finger against my dollar that you're right?' He agreed. I said, 'Well, you are right.' To this day he catches me in the biggest crowd he can and asks me when I gonna pay up that dollar," Ford tells, chuckling. Another favorite tale of Ford's began in his classroom when things got awfully quiet. "I knew something was up. I saw a paper go across the room. I said I wanted that paper. It was my head on top of a rooster. I said, 'My goodness, who drew this?' I told him I wanted the picture and told him he could become a great cartoonist. They thought I'd be mad and whip him,'' Ford recalls. He says he only whipped one high school student" because he disobeyed me willfully. He was the first one to visit me at the Jackson House, though.'' Homer Ford has seen many changes and has been instrumental in making a lot of changes in Marshall County. The one change he hopes never to see is a loss of his mental faculties which he sees in many others in the home. His recall of the past is so vivid it's hard to imagine that happening. If the old adage, "you're as young as you feel", is true it shouldn't. More About Homer W Ford: Burial: Calvert City Cemetery, Marshall Co, Ky Children of Larrie Kennedy and Homer Ford are: i.
