Note: (killed **) indicates that the source mentioned records this individual killed, when in fact they were among those captured by the Indians at The Blue Licks, as shown in Reference #20, above. Some of these later died in captivity, but many escaped, or were held by the British until traded, or released at the end of the war. Some were "adopted" by the Indians, and remained with the Indians, even after the war.

Judge French Tipton and his Papers

A lot of Madison County persons have heard of the "French Tipton Papers," but only a few seem to know who French Tipton was, or what his papers were.

Born near Boonesborough in the 1850's, French Tipton was the son of Darius B. Tipton, and the great-great-grandson of John Tipton, an Englishman who came to this country and fought with the colonial forces in the Revolutionary War. He was a graduate of the Madison Male Academy which was on the site now occupied by the Richmond Armory. For a while he was secretary of the Madison County Teachers' Institute; and then in 1875 became the first graduate of Central University when he was awarded the LL.B. degree.

Teaching and law, however, did not hold him for long, for he soon moved into the field of journalism. He did a great deal of research for his writings and kept most of his notes concerning the history of Madison County and its leading families. In interviewing older citizens and exchanging letters with those who had moved elsewhere, he obtained a sizable collection of old deeds, land patents, and court records dating back to the 1770's.

After being the Madison County correspondent and a feature writer for the Courier-Journal for a while, Tipton turned to the Local newspapers, and at different times was editor of all three local weekly newspapers, the Kentucky Register, the Climax and the Pantograph. He also traveled widely, often in search for interesting subjects on which he could write feature articles.

French Tipton saw that his notes and old correspondence could provide some of the necessary information for a history of Madison County. Toward that end he started collecting more notes from old sources and also photographs of places in the county. But just about the time his collection of papers and photographs was about complete, he was killed in a fight on Main Street one Saturday night in September, 1900.

Several years ago, when the curator of Eastern's museum, Dr. J.T. Dorris, obtained the French Tipton papers and photographs, they were piled loose in an old trunk. Just a few years ago, one of our local historians, David C. Greene, spent some time grouping all the materials into bunches according to type and dates. Mrs. Margaret Gardner, the Eastern librarian in charge of the Townsend Room, now has them under her care.

Included in the French Tipton papers are 15 folders of loose papers; 11 scrapbooks of newspaper clippings, old letters, and chronology of the county, and four envelopes of old photographs, mostly of Indian mounds, creeks, mills, caves, and sites of pioneer houses.
