Garrett Bennett, 82, Highland Park Community, Wil-liamsburg, passed away Saturday, August 10, 2002 at the Baptist Regional Medical Center in Corbin.

He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Union College and a Masters Degree from Eastern Kentucky University and was a school teacher in the Whitley County School system for over 34 years -- a teacher and basketball coach at Poplar Creek High School, taught at Gatliff High School and at Whitley County High School. He was also a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Marines and in the U.S. Army Fifth Ranger Battalion for four years. Military Honors include Purple Heart for wounds received in action and a Bronze Star for meritorious achievement in ground combat against the enemy during World War II European-African Middle Eastern Theater. He was a member of the Highland Park Baptist Church, Gideons, and D.A.V. Chapter 90 in Williamsburg.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Bennett of Williamsburg; two sons, Gary Wayne Bennett of Williamsburg and Richard Allen Bennett and wife, Melanie of Williamsburg; four grandchildren, Jodi Huddleston, Melanie Jo Clark, Damon Bennett, and Tyler Wayne Bennett, all of Williamsburg; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Jeanette Davis of Williamsburg; as well as several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends to mourn his passing.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 13 at the Croley Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Doyle Lester officiating. Burial was in the Highland Cemetery.
