JOHN WILLIAM WILSON, 78, of Phoenix, Arizona, formerly of Barbourville, died Sunday morning, July 16, 2000 in the Hospice of the Valley Eckstein Center in Scottsdale, Ariz. He was the son of the late King W. and Julia E. Mays Wilson, born on January 14, 1922 in Knox County. Mr. Wilson was a retired watchmaker. He was a former member of the Barbourville Lions Club and the Barbourville Kiwanis Club. Prior to World War II, he played the piano in a local orchestra, Scotty Hudson's Blue Rays, who played throughout Southeastern Kentucky. During World War II, he served in the United States Army, in the Pacific theater. On September 3, 1947, he married Mary Katherine "Katsy" Viall in Barbourville and to this union three children were born. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Eve Riley Jackson. Survivors include his wife, Katsy Wilson of Phoenix, Ariz.; three children, David H. Wilson and Susan Barham and husband Bill, all of Phoenix, Ariz. and Elizabeth Bonitz and husband Lew, of Tempe, Ariz.; one sister, Viola Wilson and husband Cecil of Barbourville; one grandson, John C. Barham; several nieces and nephews; among other loved ones and dear friends who mourn his passing. Graveside services will be conducted in the Barbourville Cemetery Friday, July 21 at 3 p.m. with the Rev. M.A. Reese officiating. Casketbearers will be Harold Purcell, William Ball, Dan Purcell, James Purcell, Lew Bonitz and Bob Wilson. Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday evening between 6 and 9 p.m. and Friday after 9 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., at which time Mr. Wilson will be taken to the Barbourville Cemetery for graveside services. Expressions of sympathy may go to either the Hospice of the Valley, 1510 East Flower Street, Phoenix, AZ 85014-5699 or to the American Cancer Society, 574 South Mayo Trail, Suite 2, Pikeville, KY 41501 in loving memory of Mr. Wilson. Knox Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
