TED STEWART FROM THE MIDDLETOWN (OH) JOURNAL 12/30/07

Ted Stewart, Age 67, of Middletown, OH, died on December 28, 2007, at Christ Hospital after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Barbourville, KY on November 9, 1940 to parents Lawrence Stewart, Sr. and Jessie Elizabeth (Sutton) Stewart. Mr. Stewart graduated from Barbourville High School, and attended Union College where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Health and Physical Education, with a minor in Business. He served his country in the United States Army National Guard. After several years of teaching and coaching in both Kentucky and Indiana, Ted and his family moved to Middletown, OH. He taught and coached at the Middletown Freshman School for two years, followed by five years of being an assistant coach to Paul Walker, Head Coach of the Middletown Middies. After Mr. Walker's retirement, Ted became the Head Basketball Coach in 1976, serving eight years until his retirement in 1984. He later returned to coaching freshman, junior varsity and varsity sports at both Middletown and Monroe High Schools, including girl's volleyball and basketball, and boys basketball teams. During his tenure as Head Basketball Coach at Middletown, Ted led the Middies to a record of 131 wins and only 48 losses. His teams won the GMC championship five times, two district championships, a regional title, and was a state semi-finalist in 1983. He was elected the GMC Coach of the Year in 1983, and was inducted into the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in 1983. In 2004 Ted was elected to the Middletown High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He became a member of the Gold Medal Club in the 1998 Pigskin Roundball Spectacular. He was also given the honor of becoming a Kentucky Colonel. He is survived by his beloved wife, Gwen (Gregory) Stewart, whom he married on June 24, 1961; two daughters, Teri (Greg) Perkins and Beth (Marc) Etchison; one son, Todd (Adelia) Stewart; ten grandchildren, Sarah, Samantha, Lydia, Nicholas, Daniel, Evan, Connor, Elise, Aidan and Gavin; one brother, Lawrence Stewart, Jr.; nephew, Gregg (Denise) Stewart and niece, Angie (Michael) Jackson and their families; special cousins, Shirley (Jerry) Elliott and Jerry (Anita) Stewart and their families; and many special friends and family who will dearly miss him. Ted was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on January 3, 2008 at Wilson-Schramm-Spaulding Funeral Home, 3805 Roosevelt Blvd. at Bonita Drive with Rev. Arthur Wilson and Pastor Jerry Pelfrey officiating. Visitation will be January 2, 2008 from 5:00-8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Interment will be in Barbourville, KY. Ted STEWART

Mr. Ted Stewart, 67, of Middletown, OH, passed away Friday afternoon, December 28, 2007 in the Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, OH. He was a son of the late Lawrence Stewart Sr. and Jessie Sutton Stewart born on November 9, 1940 in Barbourville. Mr. Stewart graduated from Barbourville High School and attended Union College where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Health and Physical Education with a minor in Business. He faithfully served in the United States Army National Guard. After years of teaching and coaching in both Kentucky and Indiana, Ted and his family moved to Middletown, OH. Survivors include his beloved wife, Gwen Gregory Stewart, whom he married on June 24, 1961; two daughters, Teri Perkins and husband, Greg, and Beth Etchison and husband, Marc; a son, Todd Stewart and wife, Adelia; ten grandchildren, Sarah, Samantha, Lydia, Nicholas, Daniel, Evan, Connor, Elise, Aidan and Gavin; a brother, Lawrence Stewart Jr.; a nephew, Gregg Stewart and wife, Denise, and their family; a niece, Angie Jackson and husband, Michael, and their family; special cousins, Shirley Elliott and husband, Jerry, and Jerry Stewart and wife, Anita, and their families; and many other special family and friends who will dearly miss him. His funeral service was conducted in the chapel of the Wilson-Schramm-Spaulding Funeral Home in Middletown, OH Thursday, January 3, 2008 at 11 A.M. with Rev. Arthur Wilson and Pastor Jerry Pelfrey officiating. A graveside service was conducted in the Barbourville Cemetery Saturday, January 5 at 2 P.M. with Rev. Arthur Wilson officiating.
