Leslie Franklin McDONALD

Mr. Leslie Franklin McDonald, 85, of Middlesboro, Ky. was born in Barbourville, Ky. on September 1, 1921. He was a son of the late Witt McDonald and Effie Bennett McDonald. Mr. McDonald died Monday, Sept.18, 2006 in the Middlesboro Appalachian Regional Hospital. He was a factory worker in Columbus, Indiana and was a World War II Army veteran. Before retiring, Mr. McDonald would travel every weekend to Barbourville to care for his parents and visit his beloved sweetheart, Effie Fisher. He and Effie loved horse racing. He attended 30 consecutive Kentucky Derbys. Les enjoyed "down home" cooking, and at one time owned a restaurant. After the death of his parents and his sweetheart, Effie, he moved to Middlesboro and lived with his sister, Dorothy Vaughn. He and his sister, Dorothy, attended off track horse racing, traveled to Las Vegas, and kept each other company. He was also preceded in death by a great nephew, Seth. Mr. McDonald is survived by his sister, Dorothy Vaughn of Middlesboro; his brother, Irvin and wife Helen McDonald of Dayton, Ohio; he is also survived by several beloved nephews, Don Vaughn, Robert Vaughn, Bobby Witt Vaughn and Jeff McDonald; many other family members and dear friends, Craig Buck and wife Bev of Columbus, Indiana, and Bill Stewart of Flat Lick.

Funeral services for Leslie Franklin McDonald were conducted in Hopper Funeral Home Chapel Thursday, September 21, 2006 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Jimmy Siler officiating. Interment followed in the Barbourville Cemetery with nephews, Robert Vaughn, Don Vaughn, Jeff McDonald and dear friend Craig Buck serving as pallbearers.
