JOHN WAYNE FARMER, SR.
"If there's ever been a true friend to the working man, Johnny Farmer is truly the Farmer's friend." John Wayne Farmer Jr. and family. John Wayne Farmer Sr., "Johnny Farmer," 60, of the Artemus Road, Barbourville, died Saturday, Oct. 15, 2005 at his home. He was a son of Hortence (Melton) Farmer and the late Foister Farmer Sr., born to them on Feb. 18, 1945 in Knox County. Johnny was the owner and operator of Farmer's Market on the Artemus Road. He believed in the Baptist faith and was a member of East Barbourville Baptist Church. On Dec. 24, 1964, he united in marriage to Virginia M. Barrett and to this union three children were born. Johnny was preceded in death by his father: Foister Farmer Sr. and a nephew: Keith Edward Faul. He is survived by: One daughter: Sherry Lynn Smith and husband Steve. Two sons: John Wayne Farmer Jr. and wife Michelle and Glendon Michael Farmer. Five grandchildren: Steve Lee Smith II, Christopher Tyler Smith, Alexus Jenea Smith, Austin Lee Farmer and Branden Lee Farmer. His mother: Hortence Farmer, his sister: Betty Sue Herman and his brother: Foister Farmer Jr. and wife Lila, all of Barbourville. Two nieces: Pam Calvert and Renee Adams. Two nephews: Steve Farmer and Kenny Faul. He also leaves a host of: Aunts, uncles, cousins, great nieces, great nephews and friends who mourn his passing.
Funeral services for Johnny Farmer were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2005 at the East Barbourville Baptist Church with the Rev. James Vandy officiating. Burial was in Barbourville Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Vernon Farmer, Steve Farmer, Kenneth Smith, Donnie Martin, Roy Mills, Randall Roach and Mike Corey. Honorary bearers were: Dr. L.K. Butcher. Hopper Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
