Mrs. Ruth B. COLE

Mrs. Ruth B. Cole, 93, of Lexington, formerly of Barbourville, passed away Wednesday evening, September 12, 2007, in the Tanbark Health Care Center in Lexington. She was a daughter of the late J. W. and Talma Barbour Blankenship and was born on January 29, 1914, in Lexington. After graduating from Henry Clay High School and receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics from the University of Kentucky, she worked as a home demonstration agent in Williamsburg and Barbourville. During World War II, Mrs. Cole participated in the war effort by working as a chemist for the Goodyear Rubber Company in Louisville, by servicing airplanes in New Mexico and by working in the farmer's market in California. She was the first special education teacher in the Knox County School System and in 1979 was awarded Outstanding Special Education Teacher in Knox County. In addition, she served as dietician for the Knox County Hospital and Daniel Boone Manor Nursing Home and was the director of the Knox County Library. She was a former president of the Barbourville Garden Club, the Garden Club of Kentucky, the Lambda chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma educational fraternity, the Barbourville Woman's Study Club and the Lexington Woman's Club  Garden Department. She was nationally recognized as a master flower judge and most recently was an emeritus master flower show judge for the Kentucky Council of Flower Show Judges. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Barbourville, the Dr. Thomas Walker Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Women's Missionary Union. On February 21, 1940, she was united in marriage with Earl L. Cole Sr. in Lexington and to this union three children were born. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Earl, on August 21, 1996; a sister, Aileen Roark; a brother, Charles Blankenship; and a daughter-in-law, Etna Cole. Survivors include her children, Earl L. Cole Jr. of Lexington, Lynda L. Cole and husband, John M. Mahoney, of Moraga, CA, and Cynthia Cole Marsteller of Manakin-Sabot, VA; seven grandchildren, James Cole, Michael, Maria and Matthew Mahoney, Ruth Ellen, Dudley and Augusta Marsteller; a great granddaughter, Cate Cole; a nephew, James Roark of Lexington, as well as other loved ones and dear friends who mourn her passing. Her funeral service was conducted at the First Baptist Church of Barbourville Saturday, September 15 at 11 A.M. with Rev. Shane Nickell and Rev. Tommy Teague officiating. Mrs. Cole was laid to rest in the Barbourville Cemetery. Casket bearers were James Cole, Michael Mahoney, Matthew Mahoney, Dudley Marsteller, David Cole and John Anderson. Expressions of sympathy may go to either the First Baptist Church of Barbourville or to Union College in loving memory of Mrs. Cole. Arrangements were under the direction of the Knox Funeral Home.
