The 1880 Federal Census Mortality Schedules are just enough different from previous years to�cause heavy sighing and moderate confusion for the average researcher. In addition, I've tried to compress some of the information into one column rather than several, so this will not directly match the original form. But here's the information in the columns, from left to right:

Last Name
First Name
Number corresponding to the family in Column 2 of schedule 1.
Age at time of death
Sex
Race
Marital status (S,M,W,D, for single, married, widowed or divorced).
Place where the deceased was born.
Birthplace of father of the deceased.
Birthplace of mother of the deceased.
Profession, trade, or occupation.
Month when death occurred.
Cause of death.
How long the deceased had resided in the county.
Name of attending physician.
There was also a column on the original schedule for the name of the place where the disease causing the death was contracted, if not in Knox county, but this was so rarely noted that I put it in the comments column.

As far as spelling, I tried very hard to read and spell the names as written, even when it caused grief that the names would be too distorted to show up on search engines. Kuningham is probably being spelled Cunningham these days, and Myrack I believe is usually Myrick--- but I tried to be faithful to the original spelling when it could be deciphered. When it came time to list the cause of death, however, I lost all genealogical credibility and my RN's training came back. Even though "newmony fever" is more colorful, I translated it as pneumonia fever. My favorite misspellings are the ones that render "inflammation" as "infomation" or "infamation" or even "information," but to try and serve the truth in a sensible manner, I recorded them all as inflammation. Others are spelled correctly in the original, but still mysterious (how did 8 month old Mary Patterson died "by affright of mother?")
