Knott County, the 118th county in order of formation, is located in the mountains of eastern Kentucky. The county is bounded by Perry, Breathitt, Magoffin, Floyd, Pike, and Letcher counties, and covers an area of 352 square miles. It was formed from portions of Perry, Letcher, Floyd, and Breathitt counties in 1884. The county was named for Gov. James Proctor Knott (1883-87). The county seat is Hindman. The county seat is home to the Hindman Settlement School, founded as America's first settlement school. The Knott County town of Pippa Passes is home to Alice Lloyd College.

Letcher County legislator Robert Bates helped to oversee the creation of the new county, which is the site of the headwaters of several major creeks that flow into either the Big Sandy or Kentucky rivers. Knott is the only Kentucky county that does not have a river within its boundaries or bordering it.
