1.  LAWRENCE DAMERON3 SR.  (GEORGE2 DAMERON, EDMUND1) was born Bef. 1615 in Ipswich Parrish Suffolk County England, and died Abt. 1657 in Heathsville Northumberland County, Virginia.  He married DOROTHY Bef. 1644.

Notes for LAWRENCE DAMERON SR.:

Lawrence Dameron was born before 1615 in Ipswich Parish, Suffolk County, England. At that time Shakespeare had just written The Tempest, and the King James Bible had recently been published.

In 1610 the number of settlers in the American Colonies was estimated at only about 210 persons. Large scale cultivation of tobacco had begun in Jamestown, Virginia in 1613, and in 1614 Captain John Smith was exploring the coast of New England, searching for a place to start a new settlement. The French and the Dutch were also exploring and establishing trading posts in various parts of the American continent.

Lawrence first appears in Northumberland county records in May 12, 1652, receiving a land patent for 342 acres located on the Wicomico River. A second patent for 450 acres in the same area also appears, and on August 20, 1655 there is a third Paten conveying 500 acres of land adjoining these properties. Through other land purchases, Lawrence finally owned about 2,000 acres, for the most part in Wicomico Parrish. On this land, which was located on a peninsula and used as a lookout post during the time of Bacon's rebellion and various other Colonial wars up until the time of the American Revolution. Family accounts of the home describe it as a quite large.

Upon his death in 1660, Lawrence bequeathed the home and plantation to his son George.

Thomas Dameron, a son of George , built a large brick manor house next to the original home and it was dubbed "The Brick Walls" a two story, high ceiling manor house had deepset windows, large fireplace, wide staircase and upstairs bedchambers. The grounds included gardens and an orchard. The Brick Walls plantation remained in the hands of the Dameron family until 1849.

Lawrence died about 1657

just as immigrants belonging to the religious group know as Members of the Society of Friends (Quakers) were arriving at Boston and New Amsterdam. The Quakers were feared by other protestants already established in the colonies, and were initially imprisoned for their beliefs and deported, before finally being allowed to settle in Providence, Rhode Island.

Notes for GEORGE DAMERON:

Notes for GEORGE DAMERON:

George Dameron was born about 1648 in Suffolk County, England. He accompanied his family to the Virginia Colony when he was just an infant. In 1648 England was in the midst of its Second Civil War, and in Europe the 30 years war was coming to an end. Religious tension in Europe between Catholics and Protestants was high, but grudging accommodations were being made to the new Protestant sects. George Fox, an English religious leader, founds the Quaker sect. In Massachusetts, Margaret Jones is the first person executed in the colonies for being a witch. Massachusetts also passes a law which forbids Catholic priests from entering into any Puritan territory.

George died in May of 1698. By that time the population in the colonies was estimated at over 265,000. The English were warring with their French competitors in the New World, and both sides were seeking to form alliances with the various Indian tribes in the Northeast and Great Lakes regions. In Salem, Mass., the famous witch trials had resulted in the execution of 18 individuals. The state of public health was such that coastal towns such as Charleston, S.C. and large towns like Philadelphia were experiencing smallpox and yellow fever epidemics, some of which killed nearly one sixth of the populations. The colonies were profoundly puritan in their religious beliefs, and the fear and persecution of practitioners of "witchcraft" was rampant.

Notes for JOSEPH SR. DAMERON:

Joseph Dameron was born in Northumberland County, Virginia, the son of Christopher Dameron and Sarah Ball. The exact year of his birth is not known, but can be estimated by the birthdate of his son, Joseph Jr. he married his first wife, Patience Coppedge, in 1762 in Northumberland County, and continued to live there until after the death of his father in 1764. He then Moved to Brunswick County, Virginia, where deeds in the county court show him, his brothers Bartholomew, John and Samuel and his mother Sarah as landowners throughout the years 1760-1780's. Joseph also owned land in Mecklenburg and Amelia Counties.

The children of his first marriage with Patience Coppedge were born in either Northumberland or Brunswick Counties. Patience died, most probably between 1780 and 1790 in Brunswick Co. Virginia. After wards, Joseph moved again to Caswell County, NC. On 2 April 1790 Joseph remarried to Mary Burton a widow in Caswell County, NC. He also became the guardian for her younger children by her first marriage. There is no primary document, as such, which list all of Joseph's children by name, so it is difficult to no for sure exactly how many children he had and by what name. His will, recorded in 1818 in Caswell County, acknowledges children by his first wife and wills possessions to his wife's "last six children." It is unclear whether he had six children by his second wife, Mary, or if that reference in his will included his stepchildren with her.

Notes for MOSES DAMRON:

Notes for MOSES DAMERON:

Moses Dameron was born in 1735. In the American Colonies at this time low priced sugar, rum and molasses are being imported, in violation of Britain's Molasses Act, from islands in the West Indies that are not British controlled. In Savannah, Georgia, the first Moravian community is established. Increasing wealth in the American colonies is beginning to change the status of women, and it is being reported that some women are choosing to leave their husbands when they find living together to be incompatible. Colonial newspapers print stories of "runaway wives" and elopements. Elsewhere in the world, the Russian empire under Augustus III seizes control of Poland, and joins in alliance with Persia against the Ottoman Empire.

Moses was born in Albemarle County, Virginia, which is in the geographic center of present day Virginia, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. During his life, Moses lived in western Virginia and also in Stokes County, North Carolina. Moses was the primary heir of his father, Lazarus', estate. He inherited all of his father's land and houses, furniture, livestock, rifles, tools, saddle horse, and the presumably indentured apprenticeship of one of his father's shoe-maker students.

Moses Dameron Sr. appears on the list of tax payers in Russell County in 1790, along with his sons Moses Jr, Lazarus and John. Russell County is in the southeastern corner of Virginia, and by the 1770's was situated along a well established Indian trail, called the Warrior Trail, which skirted the eastern edge of the Appalachian Mountains and ran from the Potomac River in eastern Virginia to the Pound and Cumberland Gaps in the Kentucky territory. This was the route that most Virginia pioneers took when migrating westward. Up until the time of the American Revolution, in 1775, this was still very much an untamed pioneer territory, and contact with the Indians who populated the area was frequent. These included the Cherokee, Chickasaw and Shawnee. Fledgeling settlements consisting of only a few families would be established, only to be abandoned a short while later after marauding bands of Indians made staying there too unsafe. There was no real presence on this frontier by the Colonial government, so settlers had to defend themselves, or form loosely based local militias to fight the Indians. The advancement from southeastern Virginia into southeastern Kentucky was very much a "two steps forward, one step back" kind of progress.

There is a possibility that they may have left at the same time that Moses, Lazarus and Richard left Virginia for Floyd County, Kentucky, and that from there they headed north. George spent some time in Illinois, and then moved on to New Madrid County, Missouri, where he died in 1816. [Stryker.fbc.FTW]

Notes for RICHARD DAMRON SR.:

Notes for Richard Dameron Sr.

Richard Dameron Sr was born in about 1775. That was the year that Patrick Henry delivered his "Give me Liberty or give me death" speech, and that Paul Revere rode through the streets of Concord shouting out his warning that "the British were coming". The American Revolution had begun in earnest, and the Second Continental Congress met in Philadelphia to appoint George Washington as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army, and also established the Postal system. In the Arts, French dramatist Pierre Beamarchais writes the classic comedy "The Barber of Seville". Yankee Doodle" becomes a hugely popular song with which to taunt the British.

Richard was born in southwestern Virginia probably Russell or Grayson County. He left Virginia with brothers Lazarus and Moses, and settled in an area of Floyd county, Kentucky, which later became Pike County. Perhaps it was the pressure of their growing families that led Richard and his brothers to leave Grayson county, Virginia, for Kentucky in search of low cost farm land.

Even as early as 1800, much of the good land suitable for farming in Virginia had already been claimed and ownership often was transferred to the eldest son upon the death of the father, instead of dividing the land up into smaller and smaller parcels, which would not support the large families which were available at a low price. Many other families from Grayson and Russell Counties also migrated through the Cumberland Gap into eastern Kentucky. Early Kentucky land grants show that Richard settled there at least as early as 1808, as there are 4 grants in Floyd County totaling 581 acres.

The big sandy River valley, during the time when Richard lived there, was very rugged and remote. Pioneers there lived a very primitive lifestyle compared to those who lived east of the Appalachian and Alleghany Mountains. There were few roads in the area and people traveled mostly by boats along the vagarious rivers and creeks, along which communities had sprung up. This lack of transportation demanded an almost total self-sufficiency of the settlers. Not only was their clothing handmade, but so was much of the cloth from which it was sewn. Merchants, from whom manufactured goods could be purchased, were few and far away, and the cost to purchase such goods was hard to come by. Much of the economy of the area was based upon the bartering of furs, ginseng (which grew wild and was plentiful in this area) and whiskey. The closest trading posts were over 100 miles down to the mouth of the Big Sandy, on the Ohio River. Richard would have made that trip on a flat raft made of logs which would have had to been pushed along with poles.

Richard left a will, in which it is established that he was a slave holder. To his wife Elizabeth he left two slaves, and to his son Abraham he left two others. He had managed to accumulate a fairly sizeable estate, or so it would seem from his will. The house which he left to his wife is described as a mansion though it is not clear what exactly that means. He also left to her three feather beads, which were not very common at the time. Most people slept on mattresses made of cotton ticking stuffed with material much less soft than feathers some stuffed with corn husks and cobs. In addition to the household furnishings, livestock and farm implements which he left to his wife, he left 4 head of cattle, a horse and rifle to his son Abraham. No other children were mentioned in his will, which was entered into probate on January 25, 1828.

Richard died in 1827. During his life he had witnessed the birth of the United States and saw the nation grow to 20 states, extending to the Mississippi River. He witnessed America finally expel the British presence in this country during the war of 1812, and remove the Spanish from Florida and the rest of the southeastern territory. Under President Jefferson the nation doubled in size with the Louisiana Purchase, and the Lewis and Clark expedition mapped the territory west of the Mississippi to the Pacific Ocean. he also witnessed the first fissures begin to form in the new nation, as tension between the industrializing northern states and the agricultural South began to mount, and the Missouri Compromise was passé, hinting at the conflict to come over the issues of slavery.

Notes for George Dameron:

George Dameron served in Morgan’s Rifleman Drum and Fife Corps during the American Revolution. He and his wife Susannah Thomas moved to what is now Adair County KY sometime in the very late 1700's or early 1800's. Prior to that they were living in North Carolina, but when George took up some land grants in Kentucky and saw how rich and open the land was, he returned to North Carolina to get his wife and children. According to family tradition handed down through the generations, George returned to North Carolina after claiming his land grand and told his family stories of how amazing and beautiful Kentucky frontier was, and how much better a place it would be to live and raise a family. George died in North Carolina, however, before being able to make the return trip to Kentucky with his family. Following the wishes of her husband, his widow Susannah and the Children moved on to Kentucky alone.

The Damron Family settled on lands on or near Green River, in the communities of Neatsville and Little Cake. Susannah remarried Kentucky to John P. Bondurant, and later again to Cambell Goode. The extent of George Dameron's original land grant acreage is not know, however, in Kentucky Land Warrants, by Willard Rouse Jillson, land warrant entries are listed for Gorge W. Dameron in the amount of 121 acres along the Green River.

Notes for LAZARUS DAMRON:

Lazarus Dameron was born in about 1765. In that year the British Parliament passed the Stamp Act, which for the first time required that American Colonists pay a tax to the British Crown. This extremely unpopular law was largely responsible for the American Revolution some ten years later. The Colonial Assembly of Virginia opposes the Stamp Act and joins the rest of the American Colonies in a general boycott of British-made goods in protest. In Pennsylvania, the first school of medicine was established at the College of Philadelphia. In Massachusetts, chocolate is manufactured for the first time. In Maryland, horse racing becomes a popular and fashionable spectator sport, and race tracks are sprouting up.

At various times during his life, Lazarus lived in Stokes Co., N.C., Washington and Russell Counties, in Virginia, Floyd and Pike Counties in Kentucky, and Cabell County, West Virginia. Lazarus left Virginia with brothers, Richard and Moses, and settled in an area of Floyd County, Kentucky, which later became Pike County. During the Revolutionary War, Lazarus had served as a scout in the Revolutionary Spy Service, spying on the Indians and British activities west of the Alleghany Mountains. He was still a teenager. He kept track of the Indians' migrations so that settlements could be warned when Indians approached. He, and other similar "Indian spies", followed the Indians into Kentucky and probably north to the Ohio River, and it was probably through this scouting activity that he became familiar with the Big Sandy River area of Kentucky. In 1779 Lazarus and James Fraley took part in an expedition sent to pursue marauding Wyandotte Indians who were attacking frontier settlers west of the Alleghenies. Again, in 1789, he was one of ten men selected to pursue a group of Indians who had attacked a frontier family, capturing and abducting a woman and her infant daughter. After the victory of General Anthony Wayne's militia at Fallen Timbers, in 1794, the Kentucky area was finally safe for settlement, and in 1795 about 75 families, including Lazarus Damron's, settled in the area which is present day Pike County.

Perhaps it was the pressure of their growing families that led Lazarus, Moses and Richard to leave Grayson County, Virginia, for Kentucky--in search of low cost farm land. Even as early as 1800, much of the good land suitable for farming in Virginia had already been claimed, and ownership often was transferred to the eldest son upon the death of the father, instead of dividing the land up into smaller and smaller parcels, which would not support the large families which were common at the time. Kentucky still had large tracts of open, unclaimed land, which was available at a low price. Many other families from Grayson and Russell Counties also moved west into eastern Kentucky. Shortly before 1820, Lazarus moved again, crossing the Big Sandy River to settle in what is now Wayne County, West Virginia. Lazarus had a number of children by another woman, Jane Jarrell, to whom he was never married. There were probably about 5 or 6 children by this woman--all born while he was still married to his wife, Nancy Short.

The Big Sandy River valley, during the time when Lazarus lived there, was very rugged and remote. Pioneers there lived a very primitive lifestyle compared to those who lived east of the Appalachian and Alleghany Mountains. There were few roads in the area, and people traveled mostly by boats along the various rivers and creeks, along which communities had sprung up. This lack of transportation demanded an almost total self-sufficiency of the settlers. Not only was their clothing handmade, but so was much of the cloth from which it was sewn. Merchants, from whom manufactured goods could be purchased, were few and far away, and the cash to purchase such goods was hard to come by. Much of the economy of the area was based upon the bartering of furs, ginseng (which grew wild and was plentiful in this area) and whiskey. The closest trading posts were over 100 miles down to the mouth of the Big Sandy, on the Ohio River. That trip would have been made on a flat raft, which would have had to have been pushed along with poles.

Lazarus died in 1829. During his life he had witnessed the birth of the United States, fought in its Revolution and seen the nation grow to 20 states which extended to the Mississippi River. He also witnessed the first fissures begin to form in the new nation, as tension between the industrializing northern states and the agricultural South began to mount, and the Missouri Compromise was passed, hinting at that conflict to come over the issue of slavery.

Notes for JANE JARRELL:

It is believed that Jane Jarrell was a house servant and/or bound woman in the Lazarus Damron household. She had one proven child by Lazarus--John Jarrel, who became a minister. But she may have had 3 or 4 more.

Richard was one of at least three brothers who settled in Kentucky, the others being Moses and Lazarus. A Richard Dameron was one of the First surveyors of Pike County, appointed by Governor John Adair on December 19, 1821, the same day that Pike County was officially formed. Richard died in 1828.

Notes for RICHARD DAMRON:

Notes for Richard Damron:

Richard Damron was born about 1795 or 1796 presumably in Russell County, Virginia. He moved to Floyd County, Kentucky in about 1800-1805 with his parents and Uncle Richard Dameron Sr. as they begin to appear in Floyd county court records in 1808. At this time there were three separate Richard Damrons, in Floyd County. In October, 1816 there is a court order in Floyd County in which an apparently illegitimate son of Richard's is bound over to the household of his father, Lazarus Damron, whose occupation was given as shoemaker.

Richard married on June 6, 1816 to Rhoda Fitzgerrell, the marriage bond being signed by Lazarus and Richard Damron Sr. Rhoda died sometime between 1830 and 1840, and Richard remarried to Phebe Lowe in 1821. At the age of 65, maybe older, Richard volunteered to serve in the Civil War, and based upon a successful pension application filed by his widow, it appears that he was temporarily attached to Company A of the 39th KY Vol. Infantry. In that service, Richard was mortally wounded in the abdomen and a back on December 4, 1862. He died from those wounds on December 20, 1862, according to a sworn statement by his son, Samuel, who stated that he had attended to his father at home up until the time of his death. The statement goes on to say that no physician could be found to attend to Richard Damron's wounds, as the nearest doctor was over 25 miles away in Louisa, Ky, and the area was overrun by squads of Confederate soldiers, making travel too dangerous.

48.  SAMUEL8 DAMERON (LAZARUS7 DAMRON, MOSES6, LAZARUS5, GEORGE4 DAMERON, LAWRENCE DAMERON3 SR., GEORGE2 DAMERON, EDMUND1) was born May 07, 1793.  He married SARAH "SALLY" RATCLIFF November 14, 1814 in Floyd Co. Ky.

Notes for SAMUEL DAMERON:

Samuel Damron, Sr., was born 7 May 1793 or 1794 in New Garden, Russell County, VA. In 1805 he moved with other family members up into the Kentucky territory along the Big Sandy river valley, settling about five miles below present day Pikeville. His wife, Sally, was known by the nickname of "Aunt Fat Sally", and they moved away from Pike County in 1819, only to return 9 years later to settle along the Brushy Fork of John's Creek. In 1834 they moved again to the Left Fork of Twelve Pole, at the mouth of McComas Creek, where they remained until his death in 1889.

Samuel Damron had 12 children with wife Sarah Ratcliff between 1816 and 1848, and at the same time had another 15 with a different woman--Sarah Smith--between 1836 and 1862. When his first wife Sarah died, he married the mother of his other 15 children, but the marriage ended up in a "nasty" divorce.
