Harvey Preston


            Harvey Preston was born and reared on Muddy Branch in Johnson County, Ky.

            He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Preston. This man deserves special mention and grateful acknowledgement of the people of our county, state and nation for service bravely rendered in the war. Harvey was in the Navy as a second class Machinist's Mate on the USS Wasp at the time of its sinking in the Southwest Pacific near Soloman Islands. He was in the water three hours after the sinking of the ship and fortunately was picked up by a United States Destroyer.

                He graduated from Paintsville High School in 1939 and was an outstanding football player on the PHS team. He enlisted in te U S Navy October 23, 1940 and was assigned to duty on the ill-fated Wasp. He is a member of a family of 5 boys and 4 girls.

                After his vessel was sunk and he was rescued he was granted a furlough and returned to his family in Thealka where for the past few weeks he has been associated with relatives and friends. He was ordered to report back to San Diego, California, and left Thealka November 14 to resume his duties.

                All honor to this young man who has so bravely served his country and may the protecting care of Divine Providence continue to attend him throughout the dangerous course he and many other young men are traveling in these perilous times for love of home and county
