Tragedy Occurs Tuesday Night In Huntington

Carl Preston 71, native of Johnson County, shot and critically wounded his wife Tuesday night at their home in Huntington, and then killed himself with a 38 caliber revolver, it was reported.

The Prestons had been residing with their two daughters, Mrs. Chris Ward and Mrs. Justice Bailey, and their son-in-law, Mr. Bailey. Mrs. Preston’s condition was too grave to permit questioning immediately, but the Chief of Detectives, Azel T. Bryant of Huntington said he was informed Preston had been in failing health and was despondent.

Mrs. Preston, 69, was taken to Memorial Hospital where emergency surgery was performed in an effort to save her life. The police said she was shot in the chest, and that Preston then shot himself in the chest. Preston’s body was found in the doorway of a second floor bedroom, and Mrs. Preston was on the bed. Mrs. Ward was in another part of the house and the Bailey’s had retired at the time of the shooting. Mr. Bailey summoned the police.

Mrs. Preston is the sister of Dr. Avery Lewis, a former resident of this county who died Thursday, November 20, Mr. Preston is the brother of Frank Preston of Tutor Key., Forest Preston of Lexington, and E. D. Preston of River.
