Revolutionary War Pension Application
of John Bryant

On the 20th day of August 1832, personally appeared in open court, before the Justices of the Garrard County Court now sitting, John Bryant, a resident of Garrard County in the State of Kentucky, aged 72 years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath, make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress, passed June 7th 1832.

That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and served as he states. That he entered the service of the United States in the month of May 1780, under the command of Captain Robert Hughes, and that he resided in Powhatan County in the State of Virginia, when he entered the service. That he entered as a volunteer and marched from Powhatan County to Williamsburg, where General Charles Scott ---- the command as Brigadier General. That he marched from Williamsburg to Yorktown under the command of Genl Thomas Nelson. That he remained in the service about three months at this time.

That he again entered the service in the month of February 1781 under the command of Genl Robert ---, the Regiment being commanded by Col. Beverly Randolph. That he marched from Powhatan County to the south and was at the Battle of Guilford during said tour. The Commander in Chief at the Battle of Guilford was Genl Nathaniel Greene. He continued in the service at this time for six months.

That he again entered the service in the summer of 1781 and marched near Petersburg under the command of Robert Goode. From Petersburg the company to which this affiant was attached was ordered to take charge of all the --- from the Point of Fork to Westhorn on James River, in which duty he was ----. That he remained in this latter tour six months, during which time he acted as Orderly Sergeant in Capt. Nave Porter’s company.

He has no documentary evidence in his possession of his service.

He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present, and declares that his name is not on the Pension Roll of the Agency or any state.

We, Benjamin Letcher and John Kemper, residing in Garrard County in the State of Kentucky do hereby certify that we are well acquainted with John Bryant, who has subscribed and sworn to the above declaration; that we believe him to be 72 years of age; that he is reputed and believed in the neighborhood where he resides, to have been a soldier of the Revolution, and we concur in that opinion. And the said court do hereby declare their opinion after the investigation of the matter, and after putting the interrogations prescribed by the War Department, that the above named applicant was a Revolutionary soldier and served as he states. And the said court further certifies that John Kemper and Benjamin Letcher, who have signed the foregoing certificate, are resident citizens of Garrard County and reputable persons, and their statement is entitled to credit.

I, James H. Letcher, Clerk of the Garrard County Court, do hereby certify that the foregoing contains the original proceedings of the said court in the matter of the application of John Bryant for a pension. INTERROGATIONS put to John Bryant, applicant for a pension, and the answers hereto -

Where, and in what year were you born?
Answer: I was born in Cumberland County in the State of Virginia on the 1st of January 1760.

Have you any record of your age, and if so where is it?
Answer: I have no record of my age but I have seen it in the church register where I was born.

Where were you living when called into the service? Where have you lived since the Revolutionary War, and where do you now live?
Answer: I was living in Powhatan County, Virginia when called into the service; About the year 178- I removed to Kentucky, and have remained there ever since, and I now resident in Garrard County, State of Kentucky.

How were you called into service, were you drafted, did you volunteer, or were you a substitute?
Answer: I volunteered the first tour, and the second tour I was a substitute for James Bryant.

State the names of some of the Regiment officers who were with the troops where you served, such Continental Militia ---- or you can ----, and the general circumstances of your services?
Answer: Upon my first tour, Genl Charles --- was Commander in Chief. After being dispatched to Yorktown, we were under the command of Genl Nelson. In the second tour, I was under the command of Genl Nathaniel Greene, and Genl Robert Sam--- was the Major General.

Did you ever receive a discharge from the service?
Answer: I never received a discharge that I can recollect.

State the names of persons to whom you are known in your present neighborhood who can testify as to your character for ---, and their belief of your services as a soldier of the Revolution.
Answer: I am known to Simeon H. Anderson, and Benjamin Letcher, the Clerk of the Garrard Circuit Court.

This day Simeon H. Anderson and Benjamin Letcher personally appeared before the Justices of Garrard County Court was in session and made oath that they are well acquainted with John Bryant, who has subscribed the foregoing application for a pension. That he is a respectable citizen of Garrard County, having been High Sheriff of Garrard County, and several times a member of the Kentucky Legislature, and they believe from repeated conversations with him that he was a soldier of the Revolution and served as he states.

Revolutionary War Pension Application
Mary Bryant, Widow of John Bryant

State of Kentucky
County of Garrard


On this eighteenth day of May in the year of our Lord One thousand Eight hundred and Forty, personally appeared before the County Court of Garrard County and state aforesaid, being a court of record, Mary Bryant, a resident of Garrard County, Kentucky, aged 71 years, who being first duly sworn according to law doth on her oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed 4th July 1836, and the act--- to said act passed March 3rd 1837. That she was married to John Bryant, who was a private in the Army of the Revolution, a pensioner under the act of June 7th 1832, at the rate of Fifty Dollars per annum for 15 months service as such.

She further declares that she was married to the said John Bryant on the 18th day of May 1786, that her husband, the aforesaid John Bryant, died on the 4th day of July 1833, that she has never married since, that she was a widow on the 4th day of July 1836 and still remains a widow, as will more fully appear by reference to the proof hereto annexed.

I, Thomas Helm, Clerk of the County Court of Lincoln County in the State of Kentucky do certify that there is the following evidence of the marriage of John Bryant and Mary Owsley now of record in my office. Affidavit: I hereby certify that John Bryant and Mary Owsley were married by me May 25th 1786.
