Notes for MARY ANN H. HENRY:
While corresponding with a relative in Oklahoma, (Haskel) the wife of my correspondent passed on the following obituary: I believe from a
newspaper in or near Howard, KS. Mary H. Pennington, died June 5th (1881) at her residence near Millard, Missouri. Mrs. Mary H.
Pennington, wife of the late deceased William V. Pennington, aged 89 years. Deceased was born in Ghent, Carrol Co., KY., in 1793.
She married in 1808 and moved to Illinois with her husband where she lived two years, and from thence to Missouri where she has since
resided. She was a mother of 15 children, 11 or whom survive her, Mrs. C. W. Oliver of this vicinity (Howard, KS) being a daughter. She
sought and found the Saviour while young and always tried to live a devoted Christian life, and when death with all its terrors came she
calmly said, "I am ready to go". As the sun went down the last night of her life, she said something like this, "As the sun sinks in the golden
west, just so my soul will sink to rest, and when to-morrow's sun is risen, this body will be out of prison." During the last hours of her illness
her sufferings were great, but she bore them with that meek submission which always attends the Christian Spirit. She had been a member of
the Church for 70 years, and died trusting her Heavenly Father to give her the home prepared for her. She leaves may relatives and friends to
mourn her loss; but their loss is her eternal gain. While corresponding with a relative in Oklahoma, (Haskel) the wife of my correspondent

Four companies formed the nucleus of the 4th KY Cavalry, CSA, and were organized about a mile beyond Owenton, Kentucky on the 10th of September 1862, by election of Henry L. Giltner, Moses T. Pryor, William R. Ray and J.T. Alexander as Captains.

Near Salyersville, Magoffin County, Henry L. Giltner was made Colonel of the regiment, which was called the 4th KY Cavalry. Moses T. Pryor was made Lieutenant Colonel and Nathan Parleyer was made Major. Parker was killed at Wythville, Virginia May 10, 1864, and Captain Ray became Major. The first active service the regiment saw was in the fall of 1862 in connection with Marchall's and Morgan's Brigages, obstucting the retreat of the Federal Gen. George Morgan, in his retreat from Cumberland Gap.

At the time Giltner became Colonel, he was about 33 years old. Col Giltner always wore the full uniform of his rank and rode a dapple-grey charger named "Billy".

The regiment was involved in forty three engagements with the enemy, besides numberous skirmishes and including one winter's service under Gen. Longstreet, when he was engaged in the siege of Knoxville, Tennessee.

Under the command of Gen. John Hunt Morgan until Morgan's death at Greeneville, Tennessee in November 1864, Col. Giltner became acting Brig. General of the 4th KY Cav. until its surrender to Gen. Hobson at Mt. Sterling on April 30, 1865. The men were paroled and allowed to return to their homes.

A song for the confederate veterans sunt to the tune of "Lily of the West"

Oh, I am a good old Rebel
Now that's just what I am
For this fair land of freedom
I do not care a damn.
I'm glad I fit against it
I only wish we'd won.
And I don't want no pardon
For anything I've done.

I hates the Constitution
This great Rebuplic too
I hates the Freedmen's Buro
In uniforms of blue.
I hates the nasty eagle
With all his brag and fuss
But the lyin', thievin' Yankees
I hates' em wuss and wuss

Three hundred thousand Yankees
Lies still in Southern dust
We got three hundred thousand
Before they conquered us
They died of Southern fever
And Southern steel and shot
I wish they was three million
Instead of what we got.

I can't take up my musket
And fight' em now no mo'
But I ain't a-goin 'to love' em
Now that is sartin sho'
And I don't want no pardon
For what I was and am
And I won't be reconstructed
And I do not give a damn.

Notes for JOHN THOMAS PENNINGTON:
John was the 1th, and last child of Wiliam Vick Pennington and Mary Jane Henry. He was b. in KY., moved to Adair Co., MO., south of Kirksville in 1853. Now abandoned, the home site is located from the intersection of US 63 and Rd. KK, 1 1/2 mi. east & 1/2 mi. south on the east side. They owned 75 acres there.

He moved his family again in 1882 to a farm near Mooresville, MO. (located from the water tower, north to the first road, east 1/2 mi., on north side, Shady Grove.)

Then in 1901, he moved to Chillicothe, MO. (Highview), where he resided until his death. The Christian Union Curch, where his funeral was held, was bought and moved to the Highview location by John T. Pennington. He also built the Shady Grove Church and Cemetery on the corner of his farm, north of Mooresville.

NIECE SLAYS HER UNCLE AND THEN KILLS HERSELF IN HOME

JESS PENNINGTON AND ALTA EWING ARE FOUND SHOT TO DEATH HERE

An 84 year old Chillicothe man and his niece were found shot to death in his home at 610 Walnut at 11:50 O"clock last night. Jess Pennington had been shot as he sat in a living room chair. Officers said he suffered two .22 caliber bullet wounds. The shots struck Pennington in the left side of the head above his left eye and in the chest. The body of Alta Marie Ewing, 43, who had been caring for her uncle, was in the bathroom. She had been shot once in the head with the same weapon. The rifle was between her legs. Dr J.B. Webber, Livingston County coroner, and Sheriff Kelsie Reeter, said it was a case of murder and suicide. Police said Pennington called them yesterday afternoon at 12:20 reporting his niece acting strangely and he wanted to know if officers would come to his home. The two officers contacted Dr. Webber, who also was Miss Ewing's physician. De. Webber said he went to the home and gave her a "shot" and that she slept most of the afternoon. About 10 o'clock last night Pennington had a telephone operator contact the doctor and told him his niece had awakened and needed another shot because she was very nervous. Dr. Webber told the Constitution-Tribune that he went to the Pennington home and gave Miss Ewing another shot. He said Mr. Pennington, a semi-invalid, requested that he get someone to stay at the home overnight. The doctor called a woman who had previously cared for Mr. Pennington when his niece was away, but she was unable to go to the home last night. Dr. Webber said he called Judy Fewell and she said she would be at the home sometime after 11:30. Dr. Webber left the Pennington home at 10:30 and Miss Ewing was resting in bed and Mr. Pennington was sitting in a living room chair. Pennington said he would be all right until Miss Fewell arrived. Dr. Webber said Miss Ewing apparently got out of bed immediately after he left the home, got the rifle and shot her uncle as he sat in the chair. The shots were not fired from close range the coroner said. Miss Fewell arrived at the Pennington home shortly and found Pennington dead. She left immediately, went to her home and called Dr. Webber. The coroner then notified the police, sheriff and patrol and went to the scene to wait for them. Officers searched the home and found Miss Ewing dead in the bathroom. Investigating, besides Reeter and Dr. Webber were Police Officers Jack Dickerson and Roy White, Deputy Sheriff Jack Lindley, and State Troopers David Meade and Ben Patchen. The physician said Miss Ewing was a patient at the Missouri State Hospital at St. Joseph last summer.
Alta M. Ewing was the daughter of Reuben and Phebe McCallen Ewing. She was born in Colorado and had made her home here since 1942. She is survived by her mother of Red Oak, Iowa; three brothers, Henry and Harold, Walla Walla, Wash., and Asa, Golden, Co.o., three sisters, Mrs. Alva Ellison, Red Oak; Mrs. Nova Ellison, Council Bluffs, Iowa and Mrsl. Ernest McGuire, Higginsville.
Jess Pennington resided here most of his life and was a farmer and trucker. He is survived by two daughters Mrs Mabel McFarland, Blairstown, Mo., and Mrs Dewey Womble,, Vandalia Ohio. Services for Alta M. Ewing and Jess Pennington are incomplete at this time. The bodies are at the Lindley Funeral Home.
