One story that has not been told in the Garrard records is that my greatgrandfather, Lige Hurt, and grandfather, Jess Hurt, bootlegged whiskey from a shanty boat they kept tied up by the Paint Lick Ferry. They were busted by the revenuers only one time, and my grandfather served weekends in the Richmond jail. The revenuers busted up the shanty boat and sunk it full of whiskey. Of course, my grandmother said they were back in business shortly thereafter. After researching, my theory is that since one of Lige's brother, Smith Hurt, ran a legal distillery, they probably sent the over-runs out the back door, because my grandmother never said they made it just they sold it. I have been
told many times that they had the best whiskey on the river.
