Frank B. Thompson was fatally injured when struck by a car at Clay City.

11/24/1955

The Codell Construction Co. has started work on the new street, to be built between Court Street in Irvine, and Main Street, Ravenna. [now called River Drive].

12/01/1955

Deaths include N. C. Thorpe, George H. Hume, Ollie Nickell and Brenda Newton.

01/12/1956

Deaths are those of Mrs. Abbie Marcum Ward, Nelson Grant Price, John H. Hockensith, Mrs. Minnie Hubbard Smith and James Lawson.

02/16/1956

Linda Hawkins and Bill Smyth were elected Queen and King of Hearts at the Valentine Carnival at Ravenna Grade School.

02/23/1956

James L. Dunaway, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Dunaway, is serving in Korea.

03/15/1956

Deaths are those of Mrs. Mary Arnold, Mary T. Moores, Col. Owen R. Durham and L. S. Marcum.

03/29/1956

The Court of Appeals will be asked to reconsider its ruling invalidating a $90,000 Estill County bond issue of 1953. The court held the election was not advertised properly. Counsel for the hospital committee is preparing a petition for rehearing.

Deaths are those of Mrs. Harlan Rogers, Aaron W. Plowman, P. Elkins and Mrs. Joeanna Stewart Howell.

04/12/1956

The corner of Court and Short Street in Irvine is a busy place this week with Standard Oil starting work on its new filling station on the old Campbell property, the starting point of the new by-pass to Ravenna.

04/26/1956

Junior U. S. Senator Alben W. Barkley, 76, of Kentucky, former vice-president of the United States, collapsed and died while speaking to students at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, VA.

05/31/1956

The Eagles Nest, owned and operated by Mr. and Mrs. Nola Bonny on Main Street, has been sold to Kenneth Farley.

06/07/1956

The court of appeals at Frankfort handed down a final decision which, in effect, means that in order for the people to have a hospital it will ne necessary to have another election to revote bonds for that purpose.

06/14/1956

Deaths are those of John Allen Gravett, Mrs. Nancy Rawlins, Albert Kelly, Andrew Lainhart and Rev. Everett Estes.

06/21/1956

The last passenger run on the Eastern Division of the L & N Railroad from Hazard to Lexington was made with about 30 passengers making the final trip. Most of the passengers were railroad men taking a sentimental last run.

08/16/1956

Estill County's new Kroger Store, under construction since last year, opened its doors with a brief ribbon cutting ceremony by Judge S. H. Rice. The old store, which has operated in Irvine about 33 years, 22 years at it present Main Street location, closed up for good to give way to the new structure on Broadway. Ben Cornelison is manager.
