Camp Nelson
June 17th 1864
Dear Father its with pleasure I am permited this evening of writeing to you to inform you and all inquiring Friends that I yet Survive the dead. we have as yet escaped the dangers that appeared to Surround us a few days Back at the Time Rebel Morgan made his raid through this part of the Country. we stoo in Battle aray for 8 days and nights Expecting every hour when we would be attacked But we looked in vain Morgan and his men was more apt Scollars in Stealing and Robing then they was in fight. Report says he got in Ky about 4000 horses and a grate many Guns. it is also Reported he Robed the lexington Bank out $15,000 how true this may or may not be I will not under take to say not knowing they took several of our Boys payroled (paroled) them took their guns and let them loose they Burned some 3 Briges Between Lexington & covinton the Carrs have stoped and will not be in motion under 3 weeks. our Boys put the devils to Flight at last. I want Edy Lynch (sister) to gave up my house and let Lucinda (wife) move in it and Be liveing in a house to herself against I come home. if you get Edy Linch out of the house you will do me a grate favor. I want You to See to Lucinda. Keep her something to eat and i will pay you well when I come home. You and mother must write to me. tell Lucinda I am well. let me Know shortly about the house. I am Deeply concearned in this matter If I am not able to be at home I want her in a house to herself as I know she will be better Satisfyed. I may tell you allmost every days accurances in our Boys is Bringin some of Morgans Rebel Bands. I must Bring my letter to a Close by saying I am Dear Father & mother your son John Hoover

Lucinda I Rec'd yours of the 12th Inst & was truly glad to hear from you. I wrote to you we Expected to be mounted & sent to Boonville. that has been countermanded & do not have and Ida when we will get off from here. I don't want you to go to Owsly until I get home. Be Saveing of Your Mony. in grate hart I am Your loving husband
