1949 Deaths

Hugh Elliott, 52, prominent Estill County business man and farmer, died suddenly from a heart attack Thursday morning about 8:00 o'clock while driving a truck on Main Street in Irvine.

He operated a seed and machinery plant on the Winchester Road near Irvine city limits. He is survived by his wife Lizzie Rice Elliott, West Irvine; a daughter, Mrs. Glenn Witt, Irvine; a sister, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Kelley, of Clays Ferry and his mother, Mrs. John M. Elliott, of West Irvine.

 

E. W. [Bert] McClanahan, 78, who lived to the ripe old age of 90 years, two months and three days, passed away at Cob Hill on Friday, December 9.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Emile Estes, Winchester; five sons, Martin V. Bailey, Pryse; Kirt Bailey, Winchester, John and Alford Bailey, Cob Hill, and Rev. Richard Bailey, Hargett.

 

John Taylor Blanton, 49, farmer at Witt, died suddenly from a heart attack Monday while plowing corn near his home.

Survivors include his wife, Sophia Mansfield Blanton; a daughter, Geneva Blanton, at home; his mother, Mrs. James Abner, of Franklin, Ohio; two brother, William Blanton of Ohio, and Lewis Blanton, of Madison County; a sister, Mrs. Delbert Hisle, of Panola, and a half-sister, Mrs. Ora Adams, of Franklin Ohio.

 

Mrs. Elizabeth Hatfield, 81, widow of William Hatfield, died at her home in Ravenna Saturday morning at 3:30 o'clock, following an illness of three weeks. She was a native of Whitley County and lived in Corbin before moving to Ravenna. Survivors are two sons, Roscoe Hatfield, of Louisville, and Guy Hatfield, Ravenna merchant.

 

Wylie Christopher, 63, native of Estill County, died at his home in Camden, Ohio, on June 12. He is survived by his wife, Lottie Webber Christopher; five children and one sister, Mrs. W. R. A. Stevens of Dallas, Texas. Mrs. Stevens is the only survivor of a family of 12 children, some of the others being the late T. A., Robert, Irvin and A. J. Christopher, Irvine residents in their life times.

 

Orville Ginter, 45, L. & N. Employee at the Ravenna shops, died as a result of a heart attack in his home in Ravenna Thursday morning, March 17. He was the son of the late Richard and Catherine Ginter. Surviving him are his wife, Eudell Griffin Ginter; three brothers, Clay Ginter, White Oak; Tandy and Forest Ginter, Irvine; two sisters, Mrs. Addie Whitehead, Irvine, and Mrs. Cliff Kennon, of Lexington.

 

Dr. James Benjamin Blackwell, 88, a physician for 52 years, died at his home at Witt Springs, Wednesday afternoon December 29. Death was attributed to a heart attack, but he had been critically ill for two weeks. Although born in Madison County, Dr. Blackwell had lived at Witt Springs practically all his life. His wife preceded him in death May 1, 1948.

Surviving him are three daughters, Mrs. H. B. Crouch, of Washington, D. C.; Mrs. Eva Park and Mrs. Deanna Brown of Witt Springs; seven sons, J. H., South Irvine, Eugene, Winchester; Willie, Rice Station; Forest, Irvine; Wesley, Detroit, Mich.; Lewis and Emanuel Blackwell, Witt Springs.

 

Mrs. Kattie Gentry Boian, 92, wife of the late William Boian, died Sunday at her home near Rice Station. Mrs. Boian suffered a fractured hip June 5, 1945, and had been an invalid since that time.

She is survived by four sons and two daughters: R. L. Boian, Middletown, Ohio; Mrs. C. L. Venable, Berea; T. G. Boian, Rice Station; C. B. Boian, Cincinnati, Ohio; Mrs. O. B. Garrett, Noland and William Park Boian, Dayton, Ohio.
