Easter Cemetery

For those of you who might be interested, there is an abandoned cemetery located on private land on what used to be called River Road on Doe Creek, Estill County, paralleling the KY River.  It is terribly grown up, with only two stones still standing and visible as of last year.  There are supposed to be about 30 people buried there. One monument was erected in the memory of the children of James and Miranda Easter; the other was a Virginia Lee Benton, 1923.  It appears that 1923 might have been the last burial. I have heard it referred to as "the old Easter Cemetery" but I am unsure that that is the name. My goal is to look into this further.  It is possible several early settlers may be buried there.

This cemetery is more than just grown up.  My father knew about it, and took me there many years ago (about 20).  At that time, huge pine trees were growing out of the graves, and we had to fight our way through brush to get there.  At that time, I remember seeing a stone with 1756 on it.  When I went back year before last with my brother, only two stones were standing.  I am sure all the other stones (if any) are covered with eighty years of dirt and debris.  So this is no little undertaking to clean it up; that is why it has not been done in the past twenty years.  I plan on going back this next spring to try and use a metal rod to locate any other stones.  It could be a great adventure!  I am also trying to get in touch with the land owner.
