Churches

Some of the earliest churches in what was later Bath County were organized by the Separate Baptists.

  • These included Blue Ash or Bethel near Slate Creek, which Elijah Summers organized in 1794.
  • Bald Eagle located on the creek with the same name, which seems to have been formed from at least two groups of settlers, one from Pennsylvania and another from southwestern Virginia's Holston Association, including the families of William Ferguson, Josiah Fugate, and Archibald Prater. Samuel Hanna, a Pennsylvanian may have been the first pastor.
  • The Springfield Presbyterian Church formed in 1794 was also one of the earliest churches in Bath County.

It should be noted the above churches were organized when the area was still part of Clark County.

The 1887 Landowners map of Bath County shows most of the churches at that time. Some are later congregations of churches established in the earliest days of Bath County.
