Census Records

Bath County Census records (1820-1860) are located in the Archives.

1810 Montgomery County Slave Owners (Bath was formed from Montgomery the next year) lists 407 slave owners with 1,724 slaves. We suspect half were in the area that was to become Bath County. In fact, Thomas Owings, Iron Master and part owner of the Bourbon Iron Furnace just south of Owingsville was the largest slave holder with 43 slaves. Slaves had been working at the furnace as early as 1791.

1860 Free Blacks in Bath County lists African Americans living in Bath County, before emancipation, who had been freed by their owners or had never been enslaved.
