George Allen

George was the first born son of John and Hannah Allen. He was born in 1782, most likely in or near Surry Co., NC. His father John is thought to be a son of David Allen, who owned and operated the Allen Ironworks in Surry County.

John Allen and his first wife Hannah moved to Kentucky around 1787. They first lived in Fayette Co. across the river from Ft. Boonesborough. In 1792, along with other settlers at Ft. Boonesborough, they moved a few miles east to what had just become Clark County. They lived near Nicholas Anderson's settlement a few miles south of Mt. Sterling.

John and Hannah Allen were founding members of the Lulbegrud Baptist Church, which was constituted in March of 1793. It was located on Lulbegrud Creek. In March of 1794 John Allen and John Summers were chosen to be elders of the church.

Sometime before that, John's wife Hannah had died, possibly in late 1793. John was left with seven children, with the youngest being two. George would have been eleven. Not surprisingly, John married Ann Griffin in April of 1794. The Griffins had also been founding members of the church.

In 1799, John and Ann bought a 510 acre farm on Slate Creek in what was now Montgomery County, KY near today's Jeffersonville, a couple miles west of Bath County.

John died in January 1804, leaving the farm to Ann and ten pounds sterling to each of his children. George received his inheritance Jan 27, 1804, so we can assume he was then 21 years of age.

In 1806 George married a local girl Barbary Myers who lived on a farm nearby. At first they lived near his step-mother Ann Allen on Slate Creek. Sometime in the 1820s, George and Barbary moved a few miles east to Bath County, where George proceded to buy various parcels of land on Beaver Creek.

It was there that George and Barbary's children married their spouses. Elizabeth married Austin Johnson, John married Georgeann Botts, Louisianna married Joseph McCormick, and Melinda married Joseph Crooks.

Georgeann Botts was the grand-daughter of Moses Botts, a Revolutionary War veteran who lived in Bath County. Moses' biography can be found on the biography page.

Like many Kentuckians, George's son John got the urge to move west to the new state of Illinois around 1836. John must have come back to Bath County for a visit in 1839. Because George then accompanied him back to Hancock Co., Illinois on what was surely an arduous trip. But first George wrote a will dated March 2, 1839 in Bath County before he left. We can only assume George planned to look into buying land near John in Hancock Co. and then go back to Kentucky to sell the farm and bring Barbary back with him.

Apparently misfortune befell George, because records in Hancock Co. show John paid $10 to have a coffin built for George on September 29, 1839. Perhaps George was in poor health before he started on the trip. Or perhaps there was an accident. George's will was probated in January 1840, with some of the land being sold Jan. 21 to Henry Hall. An estate sale was held Jan. 25. George's widow Barbary and son-in-laws were among the buyers.

Ironically, John died in Hancock Co. on September 30, 1840. Both are buried in Cozad Cemetery. Georgeann remarried William A. Patterson and continued to live in Hancock Co., IL. Barbary stayed in Bath County, KY and lived with her son-in-law Austin Johnson. Her daughters Louisianna and Melinda lived nearby.

George Allen was my 4th Great-Grand Uncle.
