Allen County, 10 June 1833 in open court STEPHEN MERRIT aged 71 deposes that he served 3 months as a private under CAPTAIN BRINLLEY in 1778; 3 months under CAPT. POWERS 1779 and 3 months under CAPTAIN PITTS in 1780.

Was born in Halifax County, N.C. sometime in 1762. Lived in that county when called into service. Since that war moved to Rockingham Co., N.C. thence to Cape Fear River, N.C. thence to Pendleton County, S.C. and thence to Barren County, Ky. Thence to Allen County, Kentucky. He was drafted into service. Cites ZACHARIAH BRIDGES, URIAH WHITNEY, JOHN G. WHITNEY, GEORGE W. MANSFIELD, FLEMMING HAINES, and JOHN WHITNEY, Esq. as neighborhood witnesses.

JOHN BROOKS, clergyman, FLEMMING W. HAINES, and GEORGE W. MANSFIELD all of Allen County testify to his age and character and their belief in his Revolutionary service.

Allen County, same date. JOHN WHITNEY deposes that he has lived near STEPHEN MERITT for 30 years. He recollects his uncles who were in the Revolutionary War saying that many years since that said MERRIT served with them in said War.

Allen County, 1 June 1833. Before JOHN WHITNEY, J.P., and ANN WHITNEY aged about 75 swears on oath that she and STEPHEN MERRIT were raised children together in Halifax Co., N.C. and that she lived within a mile and a half of the father of the said STEPHEN MERRIT whom said STEPHEN then resided with. She recollects said STEPHEN being drafted and saw him leave the neighborhood to serve against the British and Tories.

Allen County, 15 Aug. 1855. Mrs. DICEY MERRITT, aged 75, deposes that she is the widow of STEPHEN MERRIT; she married him 24 July 1828 and he died 23 Dec. 1843. Sworn before THOMAS HARSTON, J.P.A.C.

Allen County, same date. SAMUEL HARSTON, aged 75, and SAMUEL HAINS aged 53 testify to long acquaintance with STEPHEN MERRIT and his wife DICEY MERRIT who "according to what we have always heard and believed were married in Ky. in 1828 and the name of said DICEY MERRITT before marriage was DICEY LEVI."

On 15 Aug. 1855, J.W. FITZGERALD, D.C. for SAMUEL SWEARINGEN C.C. Certifies among other things that "From the records of my office it appears that there was issued by the clerks of the court a marriage license between said STEPHEN MERRITT and DICEY LEVI on 26, July 1828 and though said License has never been returned to said office according to law yet I believe the rites of matrimony were consummated by a legal authroized minister but failed to make return of them."

Covering Jacket: Kentucky ------- 22,222 Stephen Merrit, Allen County, Pvt. Company Capt. Powers, 9 months service. Inscribed on Ky. Roll at $30 per year to begin 4 March 1831. Certificate of pension issued 18 Oct. 1833.

Dicey Merritt, Kentucky, 15,464. Inscribed on Roll at $30 per year to begin 3 Feb. 1853. Certificate of Pension issued 8 Sept. 1855.
