Indenture of Apprenticeship

The Commonwealth of Kentucky

 

This Indenture made this _20th_ day of ___November_ one thousand eight hundred and ___eighty-two__ between __NOAH T. BUSH a free boy of color  by W.H. READ, Clerk of the county court of Allen County, in the State of Kentucky, of one part, and ____J.A. BRITE__of the other part;

 

Whereas, by an act of the General Assembly, the Judge of said Court is empowered to bind out orphans and poor children, which parents are incapable of bringing them up in moral courses, therefore the Court made the following order, to-wit:

On motion & by request of FRANCIS BUSH the Mother of NOAH T. BUSH a free boy of color and it appearing to the satisfaction of the court it is ordered that NOAH T. BUSH son of FRANCIS BUSH who is about 7 years old be bound as an apprentice to said J.A. BRITE who is a suitable person until he arrives to the age of 21 years to be taught the art and trade of Farming in all its various branches and that the clerk of this court  prepare and enter unto suitable indenture with said BRITE in behalf of said boy NOAH T. BUSH conditioned according to law

 

Now, therefore, this Indenture Witnesseth, that the said W.H. Read, clerk of said Court, as above recited, hath put, place and bound, and by these presents, doth put, place and bind the said ___Noah T. Bush__ apprentice to and under the said __J.A. Brite___ with _him_ to dwell, and _is_ to serve, in the condition, duty, and character of an apprentice, until the said __Noah T. Bush___ shall arrive at the age of ___twenty one___ years, fully to be completed and ended--- that, during all the said period, the said ___Noah T. Bush____shall faithfully serve the said __J.A. Brite__ master, in all lawful business, according to the best of _his__ wit and ability, and in all things honestly, orderly and obediently demean and behave __himself__; and the said ___J.A. Brite___  doth for __himself__ heirs, executors, and administrators, covenant and agree with the said ___Noah T. Bush__ that he, the said __J.A. Brite___ will teach the said __Noah T. Bush__ the trade, art, and business of __Farming_ and will find, provide for, and allow to the said ___Noah T. Bush_  sufficient diet, wearing apparel, washing, lodging, proper medical attention, and all other things usually allowed to apprentices by good and just masters, and will treat _him_  with humanity --- that he the said __J.A. Brite_will  __at the end of the apprenticeship of said boy N.T. Bush to give him a new, suit of clothing suitable to the season and pay him one hundred dollars; Provided however if the said Brite shall teach said boy Noah T to read and write then he shall not be bound  to pay him the one hundred dollars

 

In witness whereof, the siad _Noah T. Bush__ by the said W.H. Read, Clerk as aforesaid, and the said __J.A. Brite__  hever hereunto set their hands and seals, on the day and year first above written
